Venezuelan Embassy in the United States of America Express its most sincere condolences to the families and friends of former California Senator Tom Hayden

On October 25, the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela issued the following statement regarding the passing of former California Senator, Mr. Tom Hayden: The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the United States of America wishes to express its most sincere condolences to the families and friends of former California Senator Tom Hayden, a remarkable defender of social justice and a true friend of Venezuela. In particular, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Mrs. Barbara Williams and his children Troy Garity and Liam Hayden. His career as a social activist was inspiring, not only to U.S. citizens, but all over the world. From his leadership in Students for a Democratic Society to his efforts against the war in Vietnam to his courageous denouncement of neoliberal policies in Seattle, he demonstrated a lifelong commitment to building a more just society. As an academic and as a writer, he also made important contributions to his country. Among them, was his decisive stand in favor of changing the relationship of the United States with Cuba and the respect for the principles of self-determination and non-interference in the affairs of all nations. Mr. Hayden had the opportunity to visit Venezuela and became one of our closest friends in the United States. Sometime critical, as true friends are, yet Mr. Hayden also denounced the intentions of special interests in the United States in undermining Venezuela’s democracy and clearly grasped, what our political process has been all about: “Twenty-first century socialism is democratic, diverse, inclusive of many differences, and accepts market economics as a reality, but is united on the need for democratic self-determination without US intervention”. It is in that same spirit of solidarity and common cause that brought Mr. Hayden close to Venezuela, that we wish to celebrate his life and remember his legacy.
