PAHO Recognizes Venezuela's Ebola Prevention Efforts

Celia Riera, the Pan American Health Organization’s representative in Venezuela, recognized on Tuesday the Venezuelan government’s efforts to take preventative measures should Ebola cases occur in the country.

“I want to recognize the Health Ministry and the Vice Presidency, because in the face of a threat like this, the response by the people and their authorities as been on the vanguard.  A response in which all the sectors linked to health have unified to create response conditions and capabilities in the country,” Riera said during a tour of the recently established Simón Bolívar Field Hospital, which follows all the protocols and has the necessary equipment to handle possible cases of Ebola in the country.

The operation of this hospital in Caracas is part of the National Plan for Preparation and Response against the Ebola Virus, a plan proposed by the government through a Presidential Commission established to face the possible threat.

“Venezuela has shown leadership in confronting this new threat to international public health, and when the WHO [World Health Organization] warned about what was happening in some African countries with Ebola, President Nicolás Maduro convened the ALBA [Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America] countries,” which has enabled them to develop preventative measures with specialists in the region, Riera noted.

She indicated that the establishment of a hospital to deal with possible Ebola cases “demonstrates that there is technological and scientific development in the nation” and that should the disease not affect the country, these laboratories and medical personnel with new diagnosing techniques and equipment will be ready to see to the health care needs of the local community.
