The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was elected to the pro tempore presidency of the Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions of Mercosur and Associated Nations (EFSUR) for a period of one year. The decision was made during the 21st Meeting of the Coordination Group and the 19th Meeting of the Mixed Commission of the regional block, which are taking place in Paraguay.
This election constitutes international recognition of the work done by Venezuela’s Comptroller General as well as of the country’s commitment to economic, political, social and cultural integration with its neighbor countries.
The position will entail serious responsibilities, as it is a priority for EFSUR to establish external public control in Mercosur to thereby contribute to the institutional strengthening of the bloc and to greater international soundness.
The Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions of Mercosur and Associated Nations is an autonomous, independent and technical organism created to foment the development and perfection of member institutions through the promotion of technical, scientific and cultural cooperation in the field of control and auditing of public resources in the region.
In 2006, the Comptroller General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela became an associate member of the organization and Venezuelan comptroller Clodoslbaldo Russián held the pro tempore presidency in 2008-09. In 2012, with Venezuela’s entry as a full member of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur), the country’s Comptroller General has been a full member of EFSUR with all the entailing rights and responsibilities.
