The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is pleased to note that today, October 16, 2014, the country has been elected to occupy a seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for a period of two years, from January 1, 2015, until December 31, 2016.
Our country obtained 181 votes in the 69th United Nations General Assembly, surpassing by a wide margin the two-thirds of votes necessary for election. This is a demonstration of the international community’s solid support for Venezuela’s responsible actions in the community of nations.
This election is a point of pride for all Venezuelans given that it is recognition of the daily efforts Venezuela makes in finding peaceful solutions to the conflicts which afflict the world.
The National Government thanks all of those countries which voted for our candidacy, and in particular, gives thanks to Africa and Asia for supporting the group decision made by Latin America and the Caribbean, which last July expressed their confidence in Venezuela by backing our nomination.
Venezuela is committed to continue fomenting respect among nations regardless of their political, economic, social and cultural systems, and to promoting sovereign equality among States. Our voice will always rise in defense of a world of peace, without weapons of mass destruction, free of colonialism and promoting human rights.
Venezuela assumes these commitments with responsibility and is assured that these are the wishes of all the countries represented in this global forum.
