In U.S., Venezuela Honors 60th Anniversary of the Birth of Commander Hugo Chávez

On July 28, the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the United States screened Oliver Stone’s documentary My Friend Hugo in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the birth of the ideological leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, Hugo Chávez Frías.  Prior to the film, Maximilien Sánchez Arveláiz, the Embassy’s Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires, welcomed the audience and spoke about his experiences in the company of President Chávez.

The documentary, a posthumous homage to Chávez by filmmaker Oliver Stone, shows a different side of one of the most influential leaders of the world.  It is a portrait of a man preoccupied for his people, who sacrificed his own life, without regrets, to tirelessly work for the well-being of the neediest.  The film is a compilation of interviews of his friends, family, political leaders, Latin American presidents and even of the honor guard who were with him in his day to day life. The documentary was filmed in different Latin American cities, including Havana and Caracas.

“Chávez gave me his confidence; he offered me a connection that only exists among soldiers who have witnessed history.  This film is my response to him.  That night I could not fully express my deepest sentiments.  It is my way of saying goodbye to a soldier, to my friend,” Stone said.

In an interview with TeleSur, Stone added: “I hope these interviews give an idea of the love, of how much his people miss him.”

Among the noteworthy interviews is one with current President Nicolás Maduro, who emphasized the tireless nature of Chávez’s work. “He taught us an intense work rhythm, with commitment to the things we were working on and with the future,” Maduro explained.

Uruguayan President José Mujica had high praise for President Chávez: “I knew Che [Guevara], I know Mao [Tse-tung], but I can say that he is a person who broke the mold.”
