Over 550,000 Homes Built Between 2011 and 2014
On Thursday, Venezuela’s Great Housing Mission, a social program aimed at guaranteeing the right to a dignified home, presented homes to 1,427 families in the states of Anzoátegui, Aragua, Barinas, Miranda, Yaracuy, Vargas and the Capital District. This means the total number of homes delivered by the Venezuelan government has risen to 558,156 since 2011.
This announcement was made by Ricardo Molina, Minister of People’s Power for Housing, from the Mejoremos el Futuro Housing Development in Miranda, where he formally handed over 40 homes to families.
Molina emphasized that another 25,000 homes are under construction in Miranda, while yet another 25,300 are being planned, to help reach the goal of 220,000 set by President Nicolás Maduro for the entire nation.
Housing at Fair Prices
The Housing Minister stressed that families, in accordance with their socioeconomic status, would be able to pay for their homes over 30 years. “The right wing tries to make it seem like we gift homes and buy people, which is utterly false,” he said.
Molina explained that “we first select families that are registered … and then we sell homes at fair prices and in socialist conditions.”
The Minister noted that the price and payment plan for a 72 square meter apartment in Mejoremos el Futuro “costs 270,000 bolivars, which is not paid at once. With the National Housing Bank, state-owned banks, the Bank of Venezuela the Treasury Bank, the Industrial Bank, a line of credit is established so that it can be comfortably paid off in 30 years.”
More Homes Delivered in Caracas
Another 36 families will be able to enjoy quality housing in Caracas, thanks to former President Hugo Chávez’s insistence that within “Caracas there is room for another Caracas.”
The homes were handed over in a ceremony led by Ernesto Villegas, Minister of State for the Revolutionary Transformation of Greater Caracas, and Jacqueline Faria, the Capital District’s Head of Government. They joined the Mujica Alvarado family, who were previously housed in shelters and were very happy to receive the keys to their new home in the heart of Caracas.
“Venezuela has risen and is advancing the model of Bolivarian Socialism sowed by Supreme Commander Hugo Chávez, and in each handover, this model is progressing and getting stronger,” Villegas said.
