New Unasur Commission in Caracas for Peace Talks

Foreign ministers of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) arrived in Caracas last Sunday night to take part in the National Peace Conference on Monday and Tuesday, amid efforts by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to reach a dialogue with opposition groups.

This is the second time a UNASUR Commission arrives in the country to foster dialogue among all sectors, and the delegation includes Suriname's Winston Lackin, Brazil's Luiz Figueredo, Argentina's Hector Timerman, Uruguay's Luis Almagro, Chile's Heraldo Muñoz and Bolivia's David Choquehuanca.

The foreign ministers were welcomed at Simon Bolivar International Airport, in Vargas state, by Vice-Minister for North America Claudia Salerno and Reinaldo Bolivar, Vice Minister for Africa, reported the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.

Previously, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua had said that his South American counterparts would "support, accompany, and advise talks under the National Peace Conference, seeking to end the violent, extremist trend that has caused so much pain and suffering to our people."

The first UNASUR Commission visited Venezuela on March 25-26. In that opportunity, they met with representatives of different religious churches in the country, socialist and opposition students, socialist and opposition political leaders, and businesspeople.

Before leaving the country, the UNASUR Commission called on stopping all violent actions and condemned "any attempt to break constitutional order."

Far right groups and terrorists have been staging violent actions in some cities of the country, murdering 39 people and harassing public and private institutions across the country.

The National Government and organized people have neutralized violence through peaceful demonstrations, while security bodies work to hold extremist groups accountable.

Currently, the violent groups have been reduced to small spots located in municipalities governed by opposition mayors, with underhanded inaction of local policemen.
