Venezuela’s Ministry of Sports announced Wednesday that it will be an official sponsor of the national team it is sending to the World Baseball Classic next month.
Minister of Sports Héctor Rodríguez said: “We want the team to have a good performance and the government will support them.”
He signed an accord with the Venezuelan Baseball Federation confirming the sponsorship.
The head of the Federation, Edwin Zerpa, expressed appreciation, saying: “Thanks to the opportunity that the Ministry is giving us, now, with this support, the players can just focus on playing.”
Rodríguez said in a press conference that the funding will cover the logistical costs for the Venezuelans competing in the World Baseball Classic. The team goes to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the series to face the local team along with the Dominican Republic and Spain from March 7-10.
According to Rodríguez, the team will arrive in San Juan early to hold two clinics before the series.
“We’re going to undertake a campaign so that Venezuelans know the players,” the minister said. “Our aim is to ensure that the team arrives at the event in top condition and can represent Venezuela well.”
The final list of players, he said, will be released on February 20.
