Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez announced today that he will register with Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) during the established period of June 1 to 11 so that he may run as a candidate in this year’s presidential elections on October 7.
“Do not despair: during that period we will comply with the requirement,” he said via telephone during a press conference by the directors of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
The president also called on opposition parties to respect the CNE – the branch of government that oversees elections in Venezuela – indicating that “they continue inventing things, attacking the governing body saying that there are no guarantees in the electoral process for 2012.”
Chávez recalled that 14 years ago, when he first ran as a presidential candidate, “we always set an example by respecting the officials. That’s fundamental to guarantee peace in the country.”
“The attitude of the opposition is part of a destabilizing strategy. I want to insist on that, and I call for national unity to confront this strategy,” he said.
Chávez reiterated that the Bolivarian Revolution is a national project that is anti-imperialist and socialist, “the last one of the 20th century and the first of the 21st century.” He said that if not for this revolution, regional integration groups like the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA) and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) would not exist.
Meanwhile, Tania D’Amelio, the rector of the CNE, explained that the registration process for presidential candidates begins next Friday, June 1, and will not be extended, as the established dates must be respected.
D’Amelio also said that the national board of the CNE will make authorized personnel available to receive the candidates, and that the registration will be done electronically. The Council held an internal check of the registration system last month, in order to improve the process and the accessibility of the voting centers to citizens.
The rector said that the CNE guarantees the participation of the over 19 million registered voters in Venezuela in the upcoming elections.
