On behalf of the government and people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez expresses his laments and profoundly repudiates the killing of Argentine singer Facundo Cabral, which took place in the morning hours of July 9 in the capital city of Guatemala, where he had traveled to communicate through song his love of life and commitment to the global struggles for justice.
A great singer and author, Facundo Cabral wrote, drew and sang to help transform his surroundings, and we say with love that we have the power to be free at this very moment. Declared a “messenger for peace” by the UN Economic, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Cabral shared anecdotes of daily life during his concerts as means to inspire love for life despite its adversities, which for him included exile imposed by a dictatorship, the tragic parting of his wife and daughter and the loss of his vision during a period in which he survived cancer.
Today our thoughts are with the Argentine people and with their President Cristina Fernández, for they have lost a defender of the Greater Fatherland, a man of the fight and of solidarity. Facundo inspires us to say that it is necessary to love until we convert ourselves into that which can be loved, until we convert ourselves in love.
Long live Facundo Cabral!
