Census Results to be Published in Early 2012

Preliminary results of Venezuela’s 2011 National Census of Population and Housing, which will be carried out starting September 1, will be published in January 2012, while the final and definitive data will be completed by the first trimester of next year, stated the president of the National Institute of Statistics, INE, Elías Eljuri.

Eljuri explained that his office is currently in the selection and training phase of 20,000 pollsters who will travel around the country to collect demographic data.

During data collection and processing, modern programs will be used to speed up the analysis of information, allowing for the results to be published in just a few months. Previously, the same procedure would take years, said Eljuri.

Pollsters will have mobile devices for data collection, similar to smart phones, allowing for more efficient processing of all the data collected in house-to-house interviews.

One thousand data collection centers will be installed throughout the nation, where the information will be directly transferred to the National Institute of Statistics’ database and then consolidated, said Eljuri.

The results of the Venezuelan population census will allow the government to design more precise immediate and future plans and policies, said Eljuri.

“The census is a very complete job which has extremely important uses. For instance, knowing how many of us there are will allow for a better distribution of resources,” he highlighted.

The Venezuelan census has no political connotations and will show important results to improve several statistical and cartographic processes in Venezuela, emphasized Eljuri.
Afro-Venezuelan-specific questions will be incorporated for the first time in the country’s history.
