National Assembly Debates Events of 2002 Coup d'Etat

On Tuesday, the Venezuelan National Assembly debated the events that occurred in Venezuela on April 11-13, 2002, when business elites, media owners and right-wing military officers led a coup d’état against President Hugo Chavez.

Besides the reflections on the 2002 events, the discussion at the National Assembly was of interest since some current legislators participated in the coup.

Those include Maria Corina Machado, who signed a decree dissolving state powers and establishing a de facto government; Julio Borges, who used public platforms to “demand” President Chavez’s resignation; Miguel Angel Rodriguez, a journalist from then TV network RCTV, who used his TV show to incite and support the coup; Enrique Mendoza, who ordered the shuttering of the state-run TV channel Venezolana de Television and oversaw the raiding of its facilities.

They were not the only ones. Other participants of the coup are also members of the Parliament, after being elected through universal vote. There are even photographs that show them in the April 11, 2002 march, organized pro-coup sectors to overthrow the constitutional and democratically elected government of Hugo Chávez.

The most “sensitive” right-wing deputies did not attend the discussion; instead, they sent their substitute legislators to represent them.

Additionally, the National Assembly’s agenda included a discussion to vote on the approval of additional funds for ministries of Interior and Justice and Culture.
