Ch?vez on Honduras: ''We are Pleased to be Useful in This Process''

After a meeting with Juan Manuel Santos and Porfirio Lobo in Colombia, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez ratified his disposition to help resolve the crisis in Honduras since the constitutional and democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya was overthrown in a coup d’etat in June 2009.

“We talked with President Zelaya in Caracas. They –Manuel Zelaya and Porfirio Lobo- discussed some issues, rapprochement proposals, results, and today’s conversation with Lobo I think is very positive (…) We are pleased to be useful in this process of rapprochement, unity, integration, and  friendship,” said Chávez.

Porfirio Lobo was elected president of Honduras in an internationally-questioned election that was organized by the de-facto government installed in the Central American country after the coup d’etat against Zelaya.

The Venezuelan leader also informed that Venezuela has been taking actions so Honduras starts to reintegrate to international organizations and cooperation programs with the countries of South America, Central America and the Caribbean.

“We must use all the tools of politics, reason, and diplomacy to address and solve conflicts in our geopolitical sphere. We have to move forward without being derailed, in the path of understanding, friendship, brotherhood, and integration. It’s the only way for the independence of our peoples,” said Chávez.

“All of us must understand [this process]; societies, different groups of political interests in each of our countries, the political country, as Jorge Eliécer Gaitán used to say, to whom I honor in his death anniversary,” said the Venezuelan president.

Colombia’s president said that the ministers of foreign affairs of Venezuela, Colombia and Honduras will continue working so the Central American nation can return back to the OAS after its expulsion in the wake of the coup in 2009.
