President Ch?vez's Popularity Surpasses 50 Percent

The latest poll conducted by the firm Datanálisis showed that support for President Hugo Chávez in the led-up to the 2012 presidential elections is becoming stronger, with over 50 percent of Venezuelans saying that they support him.

Luis Vicente León, director of Datanálisis, told AFP news agency that since the September 2010 parliamentary elections, when the government’s party won 60 percent of the seats in the National Assembly, the Venezuelan president’s popularity has increased.

“Now his has over 50 percent of support. He (Hugo Chavez) is recovering space, he is gaining popular connection,” said León.

The firm’s poll showed that only 28 percent of the Venezuelan population said that they would vote for possible opposition candidates.

“Now Chávez is consolidated. The opposition is atomized regarding him. Whether this tendency stands or not, Chavez evidently would win, but the opposition will tend to unite,” he said.

The Venezuelan leader ran for president for the first time in 1998. Since then, he has obtained popular support winning the three elections in the last 12 years.

In 2004, the opposition called a referendum to cut his term in half, but Chávez won with 60 percent of the votes.
