Venezuelan Band Bituaya Tours U.S.

The Venezuelan band Bituaya is touring the U.S. to bring an interesting fusion of Caribbean rhythms and Venezuelan culture to the U.S. people.

On Thursday, March 24, Bituaya will perform in San Francisco, in the Bolyhood Café, (3372 19th Street San Francisco, CA 94110) at 9:00 p.m. with another Venezuelan Bay Area resident band, in a promising night full of salsa, hip-hop and reggae. Bituaya will also take the power of its flavor to New York City. Details of the concert are still to be confirmed.

Bituaya was recently chosen to represent Venezuela in the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW), an event that has taken place over the last 25 years in Austin, Texas. The band performed as part of the festival on Saturday, March 19, and was applauded by thousands of people who enjoyed the electrocaribe hi-hop made in Venezuela. “There are a lot of Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, Mexicans, people from Austin, from all over the world, producers, watching us,” said singer Miqueas “Piki” Figueroa, just minutes before performing in Austin.

Bituaya is a musical collective created in 2009 in Caracas which fusions Caribbean rhythms with electronic elements, reinforced by urban lyrics expressing beliefs, dreams, learnings, flavors and loves in Venezuela with a strong social content. Through its highly reflexive lyrics, the band also combines Afro-Venezuelan and Latin American elements to create an interesting musical proposal full of Caraqueño flavor.

The band is made up by members of the widely known Venezuelan band Sontizón, who decided to develop this project simultaneously with their other artistic engagements. Sontizón composed and sings the official song of the Venezuelan literacy social program Mission Robinson.

The members of Bituaya are Aquiles Rengifo, instrumentalist musician and expert in Venezuelan and Caribbean folk music; Miqueas “Piki” Figueroa, singer, poet, composer and researcher of urban culture; Ernesto Figueroa, singer, and DJ Kronopio in the samplers. The band in currently promoting its first album, Yerbamora, which includes “Alerta,” “Amor en Cana,” “Lionza,” “Bruta Cultura,” among other songs.

Bituaya is linked to a community-based cultural center know as Tiuna El Fuerte, a cultural project developed in Caraca’s El Valle Parish, where classes and workshops of music, theater, cinema, dance, circus arts, among other activities take place.

The web site of the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) highlights that “Bituaya’s music is a completely unique experience (…) “having a nexus with Revolutionary Latin America.”
