Elections at Venezuelan Consulates in U.S. Proceed in Normalcy

The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the nine Venezuelan consulates in the U.S. today opened their doors for the election of the 12 representatives – and one indigenous representative – to the Latin American Parliament, a regional organization. By law, Venezuelans residing abroad can only vote for members of the Latin American Parliament in the Legislative elections.

Polling centers were installed early in the morning  at consulates in Washington D.C., Boston, Chicago, Houston, Miami, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, and San Juan, according to each of the Venezuelan General Consuls.

Some 25,903 Venezuelans are registered to vote at the Venezuelan consulates in the U.S. The number of Venezuelans registered in the U.S. amounts to 0.14 percent of the total voter registry, which has 17.7 million voters.

Venezuelan consuls in the U.S. recognized the efforts of poll workers and witnesses - from groups aligned with and against the government - who from early this morning have exercised their duties responsibly." Additionally, they congratulated Venezuelans who have voted for their participation in this civic process.

Voting will take place at the nine Venezuelan consulates located in the U.S. until 6:00 p.m., or for as long as there are voters waiting to cast their ballots.
