Venezuelan Security Agencies Have Seized over 46 Tons of Drugs in 2010

Through September 2010 Venezuelan security agencies have seized over 46 tons of drugs in different police and military operations performed throughout the country, according to data published by the National Anti-Drug Office (ONA).The ONA report on drug seizure and the detention of suspects from January 1 through September 10, 2010, published in compliance to the Organic Law Against Illicit Traffic and Consumption of Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances, found that of the 46 tons seized, 27 tons were marijuana, 18 tons were cocaine, 1 ton were heroin, 4 tons were crack and 3 tons were bazuco.

During the eight months covered, 6,917 people were arrested for drug offenses in 5,338 operations performed by the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), the Corps of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations (CICPC ), the Bolivarian National Police (PNB), the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN), and the regional and municipal police.

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, approved the National Drug Plan 2009-2013 in June 2009, a document which sets out strategies and policies in the fight against illegal drugs.
