Co-Creator of Twitter Affirms that President Ch?vez Revolutionized the Social Network

Venezuela Increased Users Since @chavezcandanga

The co-creator of the social network Twitter Dom Sagolla said that the platform has caused a revolution in the way how heads of state and citizens communicate.

Sagolla made the remarks during his speech at the Summit of the Future held on Friday, July 9 in Costa Rica, which was also attended by the co-creator of Facebook, Dave Morin. Both analyzed the rise of social networking today and its audience. During his remarks, Sagolla said, “Venezuela has increased its number of active users since its president, Hugo Chávez, starting using the platform,” reported the Venezuelan News Agency.

The Venezuelan president launched his Twitter account last April, and in June managed to break records in Venezuela by gaining over 500,000 followers. “There are a lot of presidents,” said Sagolla, “who use Twitter, but the case of Venezuela is unusual,” he pointed out.

As a matter of fact, the Venezuelan president regularly mentions messages he receives from followers during his speeches. Additionally, the online tool allows President Chávez to be informed about the needs of his people and to delegate tasks to his team of aides in order to offer solutions. U.S. President Barack Obama has used Twitter since 2008, but, Sagolla added, “We are not sure that he is the one using his account.”

Sagolla also noted that the number of users in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica have increased remarkably due to Twitter’s use in public affairs.

The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, @VzlaEmbassyUS, is one of a few diplomatic missions in Washington, D.C. to use Twitter.
