Venezuela has no desires for war, Chaderton says

“Venezuela has no desire for war; it is not in its nature and the percentage of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) dedicated to military expenses is amongst the lowest in our region,” stated Roy Charderton, the Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the Organization of American States (OAS).

During his speech at the OAS Permanent Council, which took place on Wednesday in Washington, Chaderton stressed, “[Venezuela is] open to the any oversight that the Defense Council of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) may undertake.”

“Venezuela is indignant with the manufactured concern and threat to our security expressed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in her comments regarding Venezuela's alleged arms race and its lack of transparency,” he said.

Moreover, Chaderton stated that such defamation against Venezuela “comes from the single country (the United States) that has used atomic bombs to annihilate human beings.”

He explained, “Since 1825, [Venezuela] has not taken part in any international war and when it did it did so with the intention of bringing freedom to brother countries in their confrontations with the imperial powers of the time. From those military victories, Venezuela did not take possession of any single square centimeter of the freed territories.”

“In negotiations to avoid the horrors of the war, we lost hundreds of thousands of square kilometers without firing a single shot, but never have Venezuelan troops gone beyond their borders to make war, nor have we taken our domestic conflicts to the neighborhood,” he added.

Regarding the increasing attacks of the global media against President Hugo Chavez, Chaderton stressed that they are nothing but a clue about that the aggression against the country that does not rest, “though Venezuela purchases arms only to defend itself and to protect its process of social justice, democracy and peace.”

“It is an insult to the intelligence of all Latin American and Caribbean people to accuse us of sending arms to neighboring countries,” he said.

Likewise, Chaderton stressed that given South America's historical precedents and the strategic resources, it is not a stretch to say that the U.S. Navy’s Fourth Fleet and the U.S. Southern Command “are a threat for the security and peace of our continent.”
