The Ministry of People’s Power for Women and Gender Equality expects to create five Vice Ministries, including a Vice Ministry for Afro-descendant Women, said Minister María León.
During the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) World Conference on Actions against Gender-Based Violence, which is being held in Caracas between April 21st and 22nd, Minister León indicated that said Vice Ministry would not only develop programs for Venezuela’s afro-descendant women, it would also seek to strengthen ties with the women of Africa.
She noted that the creation of the Vice Ministry was suggested last year by afro-Venezuelan women during a summit held by the State Ministry for Women’s Affairs, which was created by the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías.
Minister León said that the goal of that summit was to design the Ministry with the consensus and guidance of women. “Following the creation of the Ministry of People’s Power for Women and Gender Equality, on March 8th of this year, by the head of state, we began to set the new structure of this new institution that will have five Vice Ministries. Among these, the most important is the one for Afro-descendant women,” the Minister added.
