The Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the Organization of American States (OAS), Roy Chaderton, emphasized on Wednesday that the significance of the word ‘Democracy’ is being applied literally throughout Latin America now that power is being passed on to the people.
“I want to express our satisfaction with the democratic advances in which the concept of democracy is materializing,” he added.
Ambassador Chaderton emphasized that recent electoral processes in Bolivia, which approved a new national Constitution, and in Venezuela, which approved a constitutional amendment, reflect the high level of democracy that has been developing in the region.
Chaderton explained that these events show how the Latin American people have been getting more power by expressing their will.
“We are living witnesses to the progress we have been advancing in terms of democracy on our continent,” he said.
The Ambassador stressed the high voter turnout in these referendums, as well as the peaceful behavior of voters who made their right to vote count.
Chaderton made these remarks during an ordinary session of the OAS Permanent Council.
