Venezuelan Cities Will Soon Have Free WiFi

“We are going to name one of the Infocenters on behalf of a renowned U.S. citizen, perhaps Malcolm X or Martin Luther King Jr. or Muhammad Ali,” said President Maduro.

The Venezuelan government is planning to offer open and free Wifi in public spaces in the country’s major cities according to President Maduro.

“In upcoming months, we will offer free Wi-Fi services in the country’s major cities, plazas [and] parks so people can go with their computers and connect,” the President said during an International Labor Day celebration held in O’Leary Plaza in Caracas, where laborers marched in support of the Revolution.

The President noted that Venezuelans have access to over 900 Infocenters, which are community spaces equipped with Internet-connected computers where users have free access to information technologies.  They are located throughout the country, both in urban and rural areas.

“Soon we are going to name one of the Infocenters on behalf of a renowned U.S. citizen, perhaps Malcolm X or Martin Luther King Jr. or Muhammad Ali,” Maduro added.

Infocenters were created by the government in 2007, and in addition to providing communities access to technology, they work as registration centers for the Great Social Missions.

In 2000, the government approved Decree 825, which declares Internet access and use a policy priority for the cultural, economic, social and political development of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
