Venezuela’s "Inside the Neighborhood Mission" ("Barrio Adentro" in Spanish) saved more than 62,000 lives in the Metropolitan District of Caracas in 2009, a result of the healthcare services offered by the primary attention centers and the Integral Diagnosis Centers (CDI’s) that are a central component of the government program.
The mission’s Coordinator of Health Care Services in Caracas, José Luis Barrera, said that about 6,236,134 patients were treated in the more than 10 healthcare centers offered by Barrio Adentro. Additionally, 2,791,000 patients were treated at their homes and 23,643 underwent operations -- out of which 6,312 had major surgeries.
